"It
wasn't the role for me, but I told her she'd win,
and I told her to get what was hers. Of course
I want [an Oscar]. But it has to be for something
I can sleep with at night." (after turning
down the main role in MONSTER'S BALL. |

Angela
Bassett has stirred up controversy in recent years with
her attacks on Halle Berry and her Academy Award win.
She says that it's demeaning for black women to play sluts.
She has successfully patitioned the Oscar ceremonies to
nominate two black men in one year. And it happened. The
first role that put her on the map was for her portrayal
of Tina Turner in WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? She won
a Golden Globe for her performance and was nominated for
an Oscar. But she resents the fact that the Academy Awards
is run by a group of sixty plus men who would rather give
an award to a black woman playing a slut then one that
is portrayed as strong.

She
has been in controversial black films during her career
including, Panther and Malcolm X. She played the same
character, Betty Shabazz in both films which was her unique
way of adding to Black American culture and history. Her
inspiration to get into acting was watching James Earl
Jones perform in the play 'Of Mice and Men.' That inspired
her to fight for what she believes in and reach for Hollywood.
Before she became an actress she struggled as an archivist
at the US News & World Report magazine. But managed
to become and actress against the odds.
