Considered
one of the legends of Hollywood entertainment, Barbara
is a singer, an actress, a producer, and a director. Barbara
started out, of course, like everyone else; after graduating
high school she moved to Manhattan to pursue an acting
career. Eventually she got jobs singing in various New
York nightclubs, getting an appearance on “The Tonight
Show” in 1961. She made her Broadway debut in 1962
in “I Can Get It For You Wholesale”, which
eventually got her a music contract with Columbia Records.
Continuing with Broadway, Barbara made a mark in the stage
production of “Funny Girl” in 1968. During
the 1960s, she released nine Top Ten albums, including
the Grammy-winning “My Name is Barbra”. Barbara
success expanded during the 1970s; she formed a company
called “Barwood Films” which she used to produce
hit movies like “The Way We Were”.

In
the 1980s Barbara continued to expand her career, and
she became the first woman to co-write, produce, direct,
and star in a motion picture; this was the film “Yentil”
made in 1983. The 1990s saw the production of “The
Prince of Tides”, which received excellent reviews,
eventually being nominated for seven Academy Awards, including
Best Picture.
Today Barbara seems to be winding down her career. She
broke a 20 year hiatus from performing live when she sold
out the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas in 1994. In January
2000, Streisand received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for
Lifetime Achievement from the Hollywood Foreign Press
Association. Barbara has also gone public with her support
for gay and women's rights and environmentalism.
