Born in the home of UFO sightings, Demi moved around a
lot as a child. One day her family moved into West Hollywood
(1978) and Demi thought it a good idea to drop out of
school and try for a modeling career. Three years later
she was trying to get involved with the film industry.
She did this by beating out a thousand other hopefuls
to win a role on the daytime soap opera “General
Hospital” in 1982. During her time on the show she
tried to make films, but they weren’t successful.
This trend continued until 1984 when she worked with Michael
Caine to make “Blame it on Rio”; things really
began to swing when she met the script that would help
her cement her career.
“St Elmo’s Fire”, made in 1984, embodied
all of the obnoxious morals of the 1980s and would forever
be remembered by people who lived thought them. Ironically
she played a cocaine addicted character which she was
addicted to cocaine herself

The
move was so successful that those stars involved, including
Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy,
and Ally Sheedy all became known as the “Brat Pack.
Each would have to work to shed this image, and Demi was
not exempt.
As the 1980s wore on Demi made more, less successful movies.
Marriages came and went, along with the 1980s. Demi kept
herself alive with the movie “Ghost” in 1990
and then “A Few Good Men” with Tom Cruise
in 1992. It seemed that Demi was on again off again, and
in 1996 she made “Striptease”, which flopped,
and the high price tag paid for her work only seemed to
outline her new status as “washout”. After
that it seemed like the rest of the 1990s were lukewarm
at best. The new millennium gave only divorce and family
tragedy to Demi… will she shine as a forty something
in the next decade, or will she burn up with “St.
Elmo’s Fire”?
