Ellen
DeGeneres is often known for being one of the first openly
gay women in Hollywood. She did the first women to woman
kiss on her hit television show of the same name, Ellen.
Her coming out to the American public came out in 1994
on her show. She began her career as a stand-up comedian
and went on to do television. Today she has her own talk
show, Ellen: The Ellen Degeneres Show. She came out to
her mother about her sexuality when she was only eighteen
years old. Her mother has always been very supportive
of her and has stood by her as she has been a major player
in the Lesbian and Gay rights movement in America and
Hollywood.

Some
of her greatest achievements include being the first woman
comedian invited to perform for the Tonight Show with
Johnny Carson. She also had intentions to marry Anne Heche
if America legalized gay marriages. However the couple
split up after 3 1/2 years of being together and Anne
Heche went on to marry a man instead. When Ellen came
out about her sexual orientation many of the sponsors
of her show pulled their funding, including Chrysler.
Unlike Rossy O'donnell who also came out on her show Ellen
has been rewarded by the move. It has helped her get roles
in many more Hollywood films, Including Finding Nemo and
Doctor Dolittle. One of her favorite quotes is: On hosting
the Emmys, November 4, 2001: "...what would bug a
guy from the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a
suit surrounded by Jews?"
