Born
a Canadian citizen who, at the age of 17, decided to drop
out of school and make a try for fame in the perilous
area of showbiz. Yvonne spent most of her teens performing
in nightclubs and on stage. Moving to the Los Angeles
in 1940 in order to get more of an opportunity to get
work, Yvonne caught the attention of Paramount Studios,
who signed her to a weekly contract. She found herself
doing things like minor roles and bit parts, but never
gave up looking for something better.
Yvonne got a more permanent contract from Universal when
she was given the lead in “Salome, Where She Danced”,
a new Technicolor Western. By the end of the 1940s Yvonne
was considered a box office draw, but had picked up the
label of “vixen”. Universal eventually dropped
her; Yvonne ended up taking parts in disposable moves.
By 1955 she was working full time, but she was far from
the public eye. One year later, after a lot of work, Yvonne
was cast in Cecil B. DeMille’s landmark production
of “The Ten Commandments” alongside Charlton
Heston and Yul Brynner.

By
the 1960s things had gone down again, and Yvonne was back
doing B-features that inspired little interest in audiences.
In 1964 her husband (a stunt man) was injured and she
took a job as the ghoulish mom in a pilot for CBS. Her
historic role as Lily Munster in the horror-spoof sitcom
“The Munsters” would burn her into American
pop culture for the next fifty years. It was short lived
though, and soon Yvonne was back on the old beat. As the
1970s turned into the 1980’s, which turned into
the 1990s Yvonne’s work slowly faded out. In 1987,
she published an autobiography, entitled “Yvonne”.
She still appears from time to time, mostly in “made
for TV” movies.
