"I throw myself into my work. It's exhausting. It's time-consuming. I feel guilty for not being with my kids all the time, But then when I'm home with my children and devoting my life to my kids, in the back of my mind I'm wondering whether I'll ever get employed again. Vanessa got her start singing and dancing in school productions and signed her high school yearbook with a promise to "see you on Broadway." She won a performing scholarship to Syracuse University, she left school and tried to make it in New York show business. Soon Vanessa began to enter beauty contests, and in 1983 she made history when she was the first black woman to be chosen Miss America. What no one knew is that she had posed in the buff for Penthouse.
When Penthouse magazine published graphic nude photographs Vanessa lost her crown, two million dollars in product endorsements, and the lead in a Broadway show. She quickly became a target as her “queen” image disappeared with her crown. But though her career and reputation were in pieces Vanessa kept going.


Vanessa first went into R&B music, then went back to Broadway in a production of “Kiss of the Spider Woman”. Knowing that the smoke had cleared, Vanessa made her film debut in “The Pick-Up Artist” in 1987. She got to work alongside Arnold in the movie “Eraser”, and even got a part in the movie “Shaft”. Vanessa, while perhaps not as big as she would like, is a lot bigger than she would have been if she had quit. She has gone a long way to show that not matter what anyone says if you have the talent and the drive you can triumph in the face of adversity.
